VM Become Unresponsive During vMotion

I had experienced an different issue which I thought to share with you. It’s really helpful if you stuck on the same case. Here it is.

Issue : VM got stucked on 65% during vmotion. And become unresponsive. Even you cant manage it with the vcenter(No power Off, Reset, Shutdownt etc.). Every option goes grayed out which can we use to fix the problem. Even vSphere HA Agent cannot reset the virtual machine if your vm monitoring is active on your HA .

Resolution :  This issue is only possible to fix via login to the specific host where the vm is residing which you can find out on the summary page of the VM.

Step 1 ) Reach to the Esxi/esx host . And restart the management Agents on it.

To restart the management agents on ESXi:

From the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI):

1. Connect to the console of your ESXi host.
2. Press F2to customize the system.
3. Log in as root.
4. Use the Up/Downarrows to navigate to Restart Management Agents.Note: In ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.0, 5.1 and 5.5, this option is available under Troubleshooting Options.
5. Press Enter.
6. Press F11to restart the services.
7. When the service has been restarted, press Enter.
8. Press Escto log out of the system.

From the Local Console or SSH:

1. Log in to SSH or Local console as root.2.
2. Run these commands:/etc/init.d/hostd restart
   /etc/init.d/vpxa restart

After restarting the Host will be lost connection and become responsive again and will connect to the vcenter.

Step 2) After reconnecting the host in vCenter, the VM is fully operational (the vMotion task failed at the moment I restarted the management agents) again.

If your vm went to power off mode than power it on again. And find all are working fine.

 Impact :There will be no impact on residing VMS when you restart the management Agent on the host. Only current ongoing task like vMotion stops working  for time being .
